MPP Glen Murray will host a Community Planning meeting in Cabbagetown at the Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club (101 Spruce Street), and will continue the conversation that has been ongoing as part of the Community Action Plan process. The CAP has focused on identifying neighbourhood priorities, advising decision makers on what they should focus on.

Using social media to find top recruits

You can also use social media to help to weed out unsuitable candidates. Employers have always complained about candidates who interview well, but don't have the underlying character they need. A recent study showed that 45% of North American employers are now using social media tools such as Facebook to learn more about promising candidates.
With more than 500 million active users, there’s a good chance many of your candidates are on Facebook — and as the site relaxes its default privacy settings, it’s becoming easier to follow what members are doing and saying. Reviewing messages that candidates post to their Facebook friends can give you a better idea of what they're like “off-stage.” Many employers have found this a useful way to filter out immature candidates who lack a professional work ethic or communication skills.
You can also look up individuals on Twitter, LinkedIn and other sites to get additional insight into their “candid” character.
Once you find good people, you still have to sell them on joining your company. So use social media to position your business as the place to be:
Encourage staff to blog about their work, and why your company is so cool. 
Create Twitter streams for your company or products that let customers, suppliers, employees and potential employees know about your market-leading initiatives, and what makes it a fulfilling place at which to work. 
Ask a staffer to put up a company page (a mini-website) on Facebook as a place for employees and customers to share their ideas and enthusiasms.
You can fill those channels with the following:
You can announce new products, introduce new employees, report on company events or comment on industry trends. Just make sure that all your communications consistently represent the company as you want it to be seen: a market leader, a positive member of the community and a satisfying place to work. Because great employees want nothing less — while you're Facebooking them, they're Googling you.

GRAND OPENING - 439 PARLIAMENT STREET




The Society for Osteopathic Wellness (SFOW), a leading provider of alternative health care services, has expanded its public outreach activities by providing low-cost

treatments to under-served communities from a store-front clinic at 439 Parliament Street in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood of Toronto.



The clinic will open Friday, November 9. 2012. Last-minute renovations are now being completed. 



The public is invited to an open house on Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on both days.



Osteopathic Manual Therapists (OMT) will be on hand to answer questions about the science of Osteopathy and share how OMT can benefit your health and vitality.




SFOW Director Jared Postance, describes the clinic, as “a dream come true.” He says the focus on helping those in need is very much in keeping with the spirit of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of Osteopathy.

CABBAGETOWN CLASSICAL YOUTH CHOIR ANNOUNCES ITS 2012 PRODUCTION OF GIAN CARLOS MENOTTI’S ‘AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS’.




Maestro Enterprises International Inc. and the Cabbagetown Classical Youth Choir are proud to announce our 2012 production of Gian Carlos Menotti’s ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’.



‘Amahl’ is a particular favorite of Maestro Daniel Eby, Artistic Director of the Cabbagetown Classical Youth Choir, who previously produced this opera in 2001 with stunning cast of students and professional singers.



This years production will feature members of the Cabbagetown Classical Youth Choir in principal roles as well as a supporting cast of adult opera singers from the 2001 production. 



In addition to the one act opera, the evening will include a Christmas Concert

of all the favorites of the season.

MJG GALLERY PAINTING OF THE WEEK

"November 1st-8th is National Holocaust Week and for the entire month, MJG Galery is hosting an exhibition 

"Lea Vogel: A Life in Art". 


Lea was a survivor of the Holocaust and was also a "Child of Tehran". She was a Polish refugee & orphan sent to Persia in 1942 (via Russia) then Palestine in 1943 under the British Mandate - all of this by the time she was barely 8 years old! In Jerusalem Lea found solace in her art and explored various mediums to express herself and received many accolades throughout her life-time!

MJG Gallery is curating an exhibition of Lea's powerful bronze, ceramic, glass, engraving and woodblock prints. The show runs Nov 6th-30th while there's an opening night reception on the 8th.

Happy Halloween

Hello Cabbagetown and welcome to another week of news, events and updates.


Unfortunately we've had some setbacks in the office with a persistent leak raining on our parade but that doesn't dampen our spirits and we are going ahead with our new Blog Format next week.

In the meantime, we've got lots to report on!

Firstly, we've had a great response regarding neighbourhood blogs and so far have a hefty list to share with you with a lot to talk about like Neighbourhood Safety and Halloween activities like, Scary-oke, Pumpkin Carving, a wheel of Misfortune, and more!

Secondly, it is with a heavy heart that we report various criminal activities in the neighbourhood. The first is a report of gunshots heard in the park at the eastern end of Carlton St. and the second is a fatal stabbing of a woman near Winchester and Aberdeen.

When did you start at KENDALL & Co.?
I started with KENDALL & Co. two years ago when the company expanded into retail. I manage the retail operation. I have a design management degree from Milan and was an IT consultant in another life. You never know where life will take you!

Why did KENDALL & Co. start the retail business?
The annual Garden Tour and Tour of Homes attest to the fact that Cabbagetowners are proud homeowners. We created a home store that reflects their values. Our friends in the neighbourhood liked the idea of a store that would carry great gifts and also special items for the home. We felt the time was right for us to fulfill their wish.
The decision to hire a residential design firm is a complex one. The merchandise that we feature in the boutique expresses a certain aesthetic. Customers can see, touch and relate to items that might be part of KENDALL & Co.’s vision for their project. The shop allows us to engage customers in an informal way and provides an avenue whereby we can familiarize ourselves with their tastes and needs. Our shop merchandise is like the amuse bouche to the start of a delicious gourmet feast.
What do you offer in the KENDALL & Co. boutique?

Design goods need to have character to make it onto our shelves. Our boutique focuses on charming home accessories, chic stationery, hostess gifts and statement furnishings from international design companies. We also carry locally made goods: organic soaps, jewelry, pottery and monogrammed pillows. We developed a Riverdale Farm Gift Collection to help raise funds for our Farm. Likewise, we carry tea towels, the sale of which helps support the Cabbagetown Preservation Association. We also host “Promote our Locals” in-store events to showcase artists living in Cabbagetown. Potter Gerri Orwin, painter Victoria Hadden and The Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers have had their work showcased.

A customer, new to the neighbourhood, was interested in our wool rugs and our draperies. In the shop we narrowed down her top two choices and on her way out, I gave her a guide to a self-walking tour of the CPA's Cabbagetown People (http://www.cabbagetownpeople.ca)
One of our designers then brought the two rugs and some drapery samples over to her home. The sample rugs were laid down with the customer's existing furniture and the drapery samples were displayed together in natural light. All for the customer to see as a cohesive finish to her rooms. Windows were then measured; photos taken and the room was then restored to its original setting. A precise quote for rugs and draperies was then prepared and submitted to the customer for approval.

Although we will have to wait and see who will be showcased next week... I think it's time we formerly got introduced, don't you think?
I introduced myself early on when I first started in May (http://cabbagetownnews.blogspot.ca/#!/2012/05/fun-fresh-exciting.html <-- Hi!) but so much has happened since then and I want to share some great BIA items that I will be helping to implement in the coming year. We want to become a resource for community members and we want your help to grow our programs.

The more people I meet in the neighbourhood, the more I want to connect on a more personal level. Cabbagetown is a great place in Toronto to live, work, and play and the rest of the world needs to know about it.

A community that has evolved so much over the years and still has managed to maintain it's distinct personality is now facing change once again. I can't wait to see what's in store for us as a whole, because We Are All Cabbagetown.


Take some time to notice the beautiful scenery in Cabbagetown with all the leaves a million different shades of Autumn delight.

But stay safe and alert! No one is immune to violence, and we can all protect each other by being aware of each other and our surroundings.

Also, please be careful crossing the street as various accidents involving pedestrians have occurred in the last few days. Be aware and make sure drivers are aware of you when crossing the intersection of Parliament St. and Carlton especially.

Cyclists are more vulnerable on the road at night and are encouraged to wear a reflective vest after dark and have a light on both front and back sides of their bike.


Although, Halloween isn't till next week, the celebrations have already begun.
