MJG Moving & Art Sale
It's official. MJG Gallery is moving to 1028 Queen St East in Leslieville! After two years in Cabbagetown, it's time to move forward and settle into one of Toronto's continually evolving districts. Barely several minutes from my current location by car, I'm really looking forward to this new step for the gallery.
In the meantime, to make my transition easier and hopefully lighter, ALL current artwork in inventory will be discounted 5-75%. BUT please keep in mind the discount will be coming off MY commission and will not at all affect the artist's livelihoods. There is still a marketplace to maintain.
If there's a painting or two you've been eyeing here, now may be the time to finally buy. And yes, I still offer layaway plans while (of course) you can still try any artwork on approval in your home, without the obligation to buy.
The sale will run until my move, some time in August.

Lots to see & Do

Hello Friends of Cabbagetown and welcome to another week of fun. Although this was a short work week, this is no shortage of things to do in Cabbagetown this weekend and coming up...

The Cabbagetown Preservation Association Garden Tour - "Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces" - takes place on Sunday, June 2 from 10:00am - 3:00pm when ten private gardens will be on view. 

This self-guided tour, using the map on the ticket, brings visitors along the streets of the Cabbagetown Heritage Conservation District of downtown Toronto and through quiet back lanes or tree-lined streets to hidden alcoves of greenery.
This year, you can get some really good promotions from our local businesses on the day of the tour - just show your ticket and get fabulous discounts!

 The Cabbagetown BIA is preparing to undertake several neighbourhood beautification initiatives and seeks the input of community members from Cabbagetown, Regent Park and St Jamestown. Please take 5 to 7 minutes to complete this survey which will help us better understand how you feel about your neighbourhood’s main thoroughfare, Parliament Street, and its adjacent public spaces.

Cabbagetown’s most prominent mural stands at the corner of Carlton and Parliament Streets and since 1996, has been a fixture of our community. You may like the concept and the design or perhaps you would have chosen different imagery. We are planning to complete two new murals in our neighbourhood this year and need your ideas.

The Relationship Show "It takes two, to buy art..."  
MJG Gallery is participating in the The Relationship Show at The International Centre in Mississauga this coming weekend, May 24-26th. This is the inaugural show and certainly a curious venue to offer original art. 
I've always believed in a household with two spouses or partners, buying art should be treated as a joint venture. So with that in mind, I think doing this kind of show should actually work as well as introducing the West End to MJG.

Come enjoy mixed gallery-offerings along with work by artist-owner Mark Gleberzon while Bev Jenkins' "sculpted oils" will also be featured including some new work. 
IF you do visit the show and buy a painting during your visit, I will deduct the show fee from your receipt - just let me know to deduct the fee upon your purchase.

Urban Roots Youth
Leslie Topness, Program Co-ordinator: "We are so lucky to work with a lovely crew of youth this year. Mostly high schoolers, these guys have impressed us with their commitment. They have been so helpful prepping beds at our elementary school gardens, shoveling and turning compost, and even double digging new beds. Plus planting lots of seeds that are filling the greenhouse with tender young plants. These youngsters don't just want to grow food, they also want to understand our mixed up (unhealthy and unjust) food system, and figure out what we are going to do about it. Phenomenal. We are gearing up for a video project in the garden in partnership with Regent Park Focus: the topic--food stories: growing up. Stay tuned to see the final project late this summer.
For those of you who don't know the program: Urban Roots Youth is a garden and food justice program for youth aged 15-29, from Regent Park, Cabbagetown, and St. Jamestown neighbourhoods. The youth begin with caring for seedlings and designing their own garden plots in Allan Gardens Children's Greenhouse, then move out to the garden to plant, grow and learn about different issues related to food justice. Many of the youth will continue to volunteer, helping us maintain gardens throughout the summer when schools are out, help run our booth at the new Regent Park Farmer's Market and help us keep the gardens thriving."

“Art of the Sizzle”, Volunteer Welcome Wagon
Make a difference and join our event committee for the "Art of the Sizzle" being held September 25th at the St. Lawrence Market, to benefit the Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre, a charity providing music and arts programs for inner city children since 1979.
TVO's Steve Paikin will MC and MP Bob Rae and MPP Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation are first on the grill who will join other prominent politicians in this season premiere comedy roast.
We need volunteers to help with all aspects of the event including:
  • Selling sponsor tables and individual tickets
  • Generating buzz through social and traditional media
  • Recruiting entertainers, politicians, journalists and celebrities
  • Design and edit magazine style program
  • Decorating and staging for event
  • Sound and lighting
  • Video and photography
  • Planning and coordinating 
  • Help create crowdsourcing campaign

By volunteering you will expand your networks, meet interesting and fun people, while helping a great cause At the Welcome Wagon we will introduce you to the programs of the Centre, the staff and provide you with all the materials to help make this the most exciting event of the year and rock this world.Light refreshments will be served.

The School of Toronto Dance Theatre presents MOMENTUM 2013
May 2 - 4 & 9 - 11
The School of Toronto Dance Theatre presents an ambitious main-stage performance of ensemble works, showcasing dancers from all three years of the Professional Training Program
·  First year students will present two new works: a rigorous and powerful piece by Julia Sasso, as well as a work by Sharon B. Moore which challenges dancers to their dramatic and energetic extremes.
·  Second year students will perform a new work on the shifting nature of relationships entitled Perpetual Dusk, a piece by Montreal-based choreographer and master Bouffon teacher, Massimo Agostinelli. They will also perform in a remount of Coralee McLaren’s colourful, sublimely musical, and uplifting work, Toccata.
·  Dancers of the graduating class will perform in a new creation by Allen Kaeja, incorporating many elements of the demanding discipline of contact improvisation. They will also present a new creation by acknowledged master choreographer and School alumnus, Tedd Robinson, who is the 2013 recipient of the School’s Kathryn Ash Choreographic Commission.

Spring Showers

Hello Friends of Cabbagetown! Welcome to another week of updates, events, and specials coming your way.

This week has seen the many faces of Spring and although many of us are ready to pack up and move to a tropical climate, do not despair, Spring is here!

"Though April showers
May come your way,

In order to be ready for a festive Spring season, the Cabbagetown BIA is hosting a Community Clean-Up Day on SATURDAY, APRIL 20TH, 2013.
Here are the details:

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY
Three locations have been identified for our community clean-up day happening on Saturday, April 20, 2013.

1. The Cabbagetown BIA will be distributing garbage bags to all our member businesses on Friday, April 19th so that you can clean your back areas, as well as store fronts in the evening or Saturday morning.


DROP-OFF your filled garbage bags at:

A) The Beer Store parking lot at 227 Gerrard St. East (at the corner of Gerrard/ Seaton)

OR 

B) 491 Parliament St. (at the South-East corner of Parliament/Carlton).


Volunteers will meet at the Cabbagetown BIA Office (237 Carlton St.) at noon on Saturday, April 20th, 2013.

2. Cabbagetown South Residents Association is also hosting a clean-up crew, meeting at 349 Ontario St. (Central Neighbourhood House) at 10am on Saturday, April 20, 2013. 


3. The Winchester Community Garden Team is meeting at Winchester Square Park, from noon-2pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013 to clean-up the green space and do some Spring planting.


If you wish to volunteer for any of the organizations hosting the community clean-up day, please email us with your contact information and time availability.



Please bring your gloves, maybe a small shovel, broom or dust pan if you have one. And your good humour. We'll make our neighbourhood sparkle for spring! 

The goal is to clean up litter in our neighbourhood streets, lane ways and public green spaces. 

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:    The City will come to our designated pick up locations, but will only take litter, not old unwanted furniture, tires, excess building materials etc.  If you have items like this please check the links below.   Some items can be placed next to your garbage bin for regular pick-up while others require a 311 call to schedule a pick-up time.
