Hello Cabbagetowners! 
Welcome to another week of fun Cabbagetown news.

I'm working hard at putting together our new blog and am very excited about our progress with our Workshop Speakers, Calender Activities, and new partnerships with community groups.

Searching the history of your Cabbagetown home is now easy-peasy at http://www.cabbagetownhcd.ca/search.php

Simply type in your street name, then scroll down to find your house photo with such info as age, style, original builder/owner, etc. Info gathered by CPA volunteers while surveying for establishment of the Heritage Conservation District.

Also, don't forget to fill out this short survey to help the Cabbagetown Preservation Association.

The aim is to gather input from Cabbagetowners and those beyond which will help refine their programs and activities and bring increased value to our neighbourhood.

Working Together to Make a Better You!

Community News

It's nice to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and to say something before anything happens.


A warning to all business owners: a person or company posing as the Toronto Public Health department is calling businesses stating that they are obliged to purchase a first aid kit from them.

Cherry Bomb staff received two calls, the first saying that they had to purchase a first aid kit, a second from the "shipping department" asking to confirm the business address (which they declined to do.)

The callers refused to supply a name or phone number.

City staff have confirmed that this is a scam.

Please be wary, alert your staff, and do not fall for this scam.

A Chill is in the Air

Welcome friends to another week of Cabbagetown News!

Great advances are being made for our new blog format. I hope to launch for the month of November.
The winds of change are in the air and we definitely feel it once the sun goes down.
I'm very excited to share the great new things the Cabbagetown BIA has in store for the new year but for now, you'll have to wait.

In the meantime, we've been reading our neighbours' blogs and they're fantastic!

There are so many great events that take place in our neighbourhood that one blog just can't cover them all. We've been linking other community blogs and they've been greatly received by our readers.

Over the Top
Solomon Christiansen - Program Coordinator

Over the Top is an LGBTQ youth drop-in program aimed at creating an all-inclusive space for queer youth and their allies. Over the Top caters to youth aged 16 - 24 by providing a space for youth to express themselves in a creative way. It is a place of acceptance and understanding, fostering growth by peer support and networking. 
They hope to one day advocate for youth and be the window that opens when all the doors are closed.
They support and organic lifestyle, community growth, and provide a community that youth feel they are a part of. 

Every Friday night from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre (CCAC) located at 422 Parliament St. youth meet to discuss issues that queer youth currently face.

Autumn Breeze

Hello Friends and Neighbours!

It was an amazing feeling seeing everyone come out for the Cabbagetown Festival of the Arts.

We dedicated serious time and effort to making this year one we'll remember for a very long time.
We hope you had an awesome time!
We've got next year's planning already on the mind.

One of our best sucessess' was the Kidz Korner at Gerrard and Parliament and that's only because of our great volunteers.

Next week I will be dedicating a Blog  post to our volunteers and the community groups that partnered with us to make 2012 the year that the Festival was "THAT GOOD!"
We're so proud of everyone's hard work and can only imagine how much better it can get.

 Cabbagetown's Resident Designer, Kendall Williams.
We asked Kendall a couple of questions about his shop and he replied with great enthuasiasm and grace :)


When did you start KENDALL & Co.?

I started KENDALL & Co. three years ago when I rebranded my design business to signal a new direction and a new location. It was the right time as we had outgrown our old office. Our new location at 227 Carlton St, in the commercial core of Cabbagetown brings a dynamic energy to the business. I also wanted to refocus on residential design as this type of project is personally more fulfilling than commercial projects or TV shows.

Why do you choose interior design as your profession?

I have never thought of any other career. Interior designing has been part of me from early on in my life. I can remember being able to draw and visualize my environment before I could write. Even today, a colour selector with colours that I have not used before still trigger something in my soul.

How do you approach interior design?

I see spaces intimately reflecting those who use them, work amongst them or live within them. There has to be a connection with the person, the company or the brand that goes beyond merely finished surfaces. Design can create a story by directing your movement, your senses and emotions.

Design is about communication and logic based on fundamentals. If you listen and have a genuine dialogue with the client, the design will happen organically. My experience, instincts and education are brought to these dialogues to ensure a balance of form and function.

Why do you live in Cabbagetown?

I feel fortunate to live in Cabbagetown. It is neighbourly, unpretentious and urban. The people who live and work here come from varied backgrounds. Local homeowners take great pride in the interior and exterior of their residences. The design services and the products of KENDALL & Co. can help them maintain their high standards. I choose to have my business here because I see positive growth in the neighbourhood. The redevelopment of Regent Park and Corktown will add a new vibrancy to our neighbourhood.

Why do you enjoy working at KENDALL & Co.?

When I first came to Toronto, after finishing my schooling in California, interior design was not a familiar concept as it is today. However, this young Cape Bretoner did not give up on his dream. In various jobs, working my way up, I honed my craft over 20 years. The result of this effort is KENDALL & Co. My creative team and I are excited about working with you in realizing your dreams.

Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club launched the Rogers Raising the Grade Program recently in support of our neighbourhood youth.

With the  support of the Rogers Youth Fund, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada will deliver a  new multi-faceted education program called Rogers Raising the Grade, aimed at increasing academic skills, high school graduation rates and access to post-secondary education for at-risk youth from a select group of Boys and Girls Clubs across the country, including the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs. On Thursday, September 27th, JAYS CARE FOUNDATION, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club, joined the MLSE Team Up Foundation, the charitable arm of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, in unveiling the newly renovated multi-sport gymnasium at Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC).  
Jays Care Foundation and the MLSE Team Up Foundation each made financial commitments to CYC’s gymnasium revitalization project, an undertaking that will benefit more than 2,000 participants. After the grand opening of the gymnasium, 40 youth from local high schools will be led by Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors representatives in a baseball and basketball skill-development session. Jays Care will be donating baseballs gloves, and the MLSE Team Up Foundation will be providing basketballs to supplement the CYC’s sports equipment inventory.

I'm sure you've heard of the Gangnam Style sensation, and I wanted to let you know that we're doing a Gangnam FLASH MOB in Cabbagetown!!  If you haven't heard of Gangnam, Google it to your heart's delight.

My name is Yashy by the way and I’m a Dishcrawl Ambassador here in Toronto. As you may know Dishcrawl is known for our food crawls through Toronto.

On Wednesday October 10th, hundreds will gather to join in a flash mob through 3 restaurants. It'll be food crawl meets flash mob. People will be fed, of course, so tickets are $25 for dishes at 3 restaurants.  It would be fabulous if you could help us get the word out, get dressed up, and join us for the craziness!

Make a Difference and complete the Cabbagetown Preservation Association 2012 Community Survey. The aim is to gather input from Cabbagetowners and those beyond which will help refine their programs and activities and bring increased value to our neighbourhood.

Cabbagetown Classical Youth Choir

 On Sunday, September 30, 2012 Maestro Daniel Eby was presented with a bust in his image. This magnificent artwork was created and presented to Mr. Eby by internationally renown Sculptor – Gabriel Ruhi Tuna.

The event was a huge success as more than 70 people were in attendance for the unveiling ceremony which was followed by a concert performed by the Cabbagetown Classical Youth Choir – a choir of young operatic hopefuls that the Maestro has been teaching voice to within the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Toronto for the past several years.
