Heather Atkinson - Registered Massage Therapist

This is my personal philosophy when it comes to how I provide massage therapy care for my clients. Playing with a synchronized balance of knowledge, intuition and technique, I direct my treatment plans to address the person's needs and up the path for optimal change in tissue health.
I joined Dr. Majda Mekis in September 2011, and have enjoyed the overall air of Cabbagetown life. Growing up outside of Toronto, I have a special light in my heart for that sense of community and 'know thy neighbour'. That sense of community is really abundant here, and it's wonderful!
Since becoming a Registered Massage Therapist in 2003, I have had enriching experiences helping clients meet their health goals. Not only by means of massage therapy but by also incorporating elements of Reiki and Thai Massage training. I treat those seeking care for a range of soft-tissue conditions, repetitive strains, stress-relief, sports-related training, pregnancy, and chronic ailments. My clients range from stay-at-home parents to corporate office workers, from artists to national athletes. For a number of years now, I have also worked directly with the movie and television industries, and provided massage for international recording artists and their touring management and crew.
During your treatment I encourage clients to go on their own journey. Whether that be to increase their body-awareness, to enjoy the affects of symptom relief, a mindful meditation, or quite simply time to figure out what to make for dinner; It's your time to just be.

Occupy Glen Murray's Office
Students peacefully occupied the Parliament Street constituency office of Traning, Colleges, and Universities Minister Glen Murray on Friday, June 22. The occupation served to highlight two crucial issues: the ongoing struggle against a 75% tuition fee increase in Quebec; and opposition to skyrocketing tuition fees in Ontario that have risen by 71% in the high end over the last six years, and made this province the most expensive in which to pursue post-secondary education.
In the 2011 provincial elections, the Liberal Party consistently promised students and their families relief through a 30% tuition fee reduction. Instead they instituted a complicated grant program that less than a third of Ontario's almost one million college and university students were eligbile for. Less than a quarter of Ontario students have actually received the grant to date.
Students have put forward thoughtful and cost-effective solutions to the government, including a presentation to the Finance Committee that asked for the Ontario Tuition Grant funds and money generated by the new 2% income tax to be used to deliver a real 25% tuition fee reduction for all students.
Student will continue to organize throughout the summer and into the fall to demand real change, real tuition fee reductions and a real strategy for post-secondary education that puts struggling students and their families first.
"Students in Quebec and in Ontario are tired of paying for poor government decisions and understand the importance of affordable post-secondary education," says Alastair Woods, a York student participating in the occupation. "Until our government recognizes and acts on this priority, students will continue to fight."

Welcoming a New Resident and her Guide Dog to Cabbagetown
Molly and her guide dog Gypsy, are moving into the neighbourhood this weekend, let's welcome them with open arms.

Cabbagetowners in Action
Supporting Our Youth (SOY) is a dynamic community development program for LGBT youth that recognizes and promotes the intrinsic value of art as a tool for social and personal development. SOY works with youth and community partners to create spaces where youth feel safe and respected enough to explore all of their identities, and many youth embark on positive, empowering journeys of artistic self-expression.
Art forms include creative writing, sculpture, dance, photography, music and video.
Youth develop and showcase their talents as artists and performers, and build inter-generational and inter-cultural bridges and communities with adult artists as mentors.
Supporting Our Youth received a cash prize of $15,000 at the 2012 Toronto Arts Foundation Awards.
The two finalists, Art Starts and Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre, received $2,000 each.
Art City - Woodbine Beach Mural
Art City is a non-for-profit organization committed to providing free and accessible, multidisciplinary art programs to the children and youth of St. James Town between the ages of 6-13.
Over the last few months the youth at Art City have been working on a 240 foot mural that focuses on the wild and plant life of Woodbine Beach. On June 20th the boards were installed at Queen and Woodbine.
