Community Updates

A few updates from Riverdale Farm
A Message from the Cabbagetown South Residents Association
Dear friends and neighbours,

Spring is finally here and it is time to get outside and enjoy walking Cabbagetown streets!  Unfortunately, spring and summer brings an increase in foot traffic and some unsavory activity to lane ways and (not so) hidden spaces.

The CRA is collaborating with 51 Division Police Services to schedule safety walks through problematic areas of our neighbourhood. These safety walks can be done during the day or at night - the purpose is to directly view areas of concern and highlight ways to increase safety and security and reduce the occurrence of unwelcome activity through environmental changes and design.
The CRA is asking its members and residents of Cabbagetown to identify 'hotspots' of unwanted activity for which a safety walk may be beneficial by emailing the following details toinfo@cabbagetowner.com:

·        street/ lane way name, OR address/description of the area of concern
·        2 - 3 sentences about your observations and concerns.
·        whether day or night safety walk is preferred (determined by problems identified)
·        other relevant information

Once received, we will work with 51 Division Police Services to schedule safety walks in priority areas. We plan to begin safety walks in the month of June 2013.

Thank you,
CRA Board

A Message from the Riverside BIA, our neighbours to the South of Cabbagetown South
The Riverside BIA would like to invite you to our upcoming event - Eats & Beats in the Riverside Street Fest.

On Saturday, June 1st, from 1:00 PM – 6:00PM, the Riverside will be hosting their annual Street Fest, showcasing Riverside’s family friendly food outlets and unique small town in the big city atmosphere.  The Riverside District is renowned for its home design shops, heritage architecture, coffee shops, food providores and popular contemporary restaurants.  Riverside extends from the DVP to just past Degrassi Street along Queen Street East.
Local eateries will be opening their doors serving tasting plates and musical entertainment and there will be a Riverside Passport where the public can collect stamps from participating businesses and get great deals for the month of June. There will be 12 event destination points with live music, and entertainment including: cooking demos,  belly dancing workshops, instrument making, kid’s crafts, henna tattoos,  food and art walking tours and of course some mouthwatering Riverside tasters.

Fresh music will enliven Riverside’s streetscape with sounds ranging from Irish Celtic, Jazz and Blues, to Drumming and Aboriginal vocals. Some of the featured artists include: Autorickshaw – a home grown South Asian fusion band which mixes traditional Indian, Jazz and Funk, as well as other musical elements; DRUMHAND -   an amalgamation of Latin, African and Jazz music sure to get folks on their feet; Riverside’s homegrown Don Valley Stompers -  a powerful seven-piece band that play in the New Orleans dancehall tradition; and in celebration of National Aboriginal History Month, drummer and singer Nibii Wawashkana (Water Flower), whose music mixes the nations within the Aboriginal culture with performances in Ojibway, French, and English.

Accompanied with Eats & Beats  in Riverside Street Fest is the Riverdale Art Walk which is a two-day (June 1st& 2nd), public fine art exhibition showcasing established and emerging artists in retail spaces, artist’s studios and Jimmie Simpson Park in Toronto’s flourishing Queen Street East arts district. Cabbagetown Preservation Association's Hidden Gardens & Private Spaces Tour

20 Wellesley Avenue's garden complete with a recreation of Kathmandu's Kumari palace window as a focal point.
The Cabbagetown Preservation Association Garden Tour - "Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces" - takes place on Sunday, June 2 from 10:00am - 3:00pm when ten private gardens will be on view. This self-guided tour, using the map on the ticket, brings visitors along the streets of the Cabbagetown Heritage Conservation District of downtown Toronto and through quiet back lanes or tree-lined streets to hidden alcoves of greenery.
One of three outdoor rooms in the garden of 297 Carlton Street on the 2011 Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces tour.
Visit unique urban gardens from the quaint to the quirky. Proud gardeners will be on site to answer questions about the creative use of small spaces, the challenges of urban wildlife, (raccoons, skunks, squirrels, coyotes & opossums) and choices of plants and other materials. Use the map on the ticket as well as balloonbouquets at garden entrances as guides to stroll through this charming neighbourhood. Some gardens can only be entered from back lanes with intriguing names: Yen, Magic, Gordon Sinclair or Nuthatch.
A restful oasis is part of the garden at 89 Winchester Street.

Along the way, also note some community gardens: at Prospect and Parliament, Winchester and Parliament and Sword Street - the boulevard gardens. This year Michael Hepburn of Hepburn Landscape Contractors will be our guest gardening expert to answer questions about gardens and garden design.

403 Toronto Scouts in your Neighbourhood, 188 Carlton St.
Volunteer for Scouts
We are currently seeking new leaders who would start in the fall, but would participate in orientation and training over the next few months. Check out our website http://kapn.net/403TO/ or contact Beth Baskin, Group Commissioner directly at 403scouts@kapn.net or 416-363-7923.

The 403 Toronto is your local Scouts Canada group and we currently have 40 youth (boys and girls) and 11 leaders registered. We run programs for youth ranging in age from 5 to 14 in three sections of Beaver Scouts, and Sea Scouts on Wednesday nights and Cub Scouts on Thursday nights at St. Peter's Anglican 188 Carlton.
We expect to expand to a Venturer Company (age 14+) next fall. Scouting is a program with a strong outdoor focus that encourages youth leadership and independence. The youth come mostly from the local neighbourhoods with a diversity of cultural and economic backgrounds. We are an open group and have families led by same-sex parents, single parents, two parents, Jewish parents, Christian parents, Hindu parents, and others reflecting the broad spectrum of our community.
We offer financial assistance to families who require it and welcome donations that enable us to provide an open program.

403 Toronto Scouts

We are embracing spring with participation in hikes in the neighbourhood, camps in Aurora and Orangeville, and a visit to Evergreen Brickworks. Each group will be finding ways to contribute to the community by running activities at the Forsythia Festival and Winchester Fun Fair and cleaning up litter over the next few weeks. Our program is varied and exciting but is only possible with volunteer leadership, financial donations and inexpensive space provided by St.Peter's church.

We'll have litter bags from the city (kindly picked up from City Hall by Steve Noble) so please bring your gloves, broom, dust pan or small shovel to tidy up the lane ways and public spaces and  make our newly paved street sparkle.

AARG's clean up is registered with the city and our designated drop off spot is Winchester Square with a deadline of 2 PM. This is also the day we will be preparing the boxes and doing early planting in the Winchester Square Community Garden from 12 Noon - 2 PM. All are welcome to join in the fun.
