A Chill is in the Air

Welcome friends to another week of Cabbagetown News!

Great advances are being made for our new blog format. I hope to launch for the month of November.
The winds of change are in the air and we definitely feel it once the sun goes down.
I'm very excited to share the great new things the Cabbagetown BIA has in store for the new year but for now, you'll have to wait.

In the meantime, we've been reading our neighbours' blogs and they're fantastic!

There are so many great events that take place in our neighbourhood that one blog just can't cover them all. We've been linking other community blogs and they've been greatly received by our readers.

Do you know a blog that writes about Cabbagetown or is written by a Cabbagetowner?

Send us the link and we'll happily add it to our weekly email. The more the merrier because everyone's got something different to contribute.

Today, we share Part II of a two-part spotlight on Kendall Williams from Kendall & Co.

You can add our good friends on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/KendallandCoDesignDecor for daily updates.

Kendall & Co.
Part II

What people need to know when hiring a designer?

I feel that you have to make a solid connection with the designer. If your instincts tell you that this is not the right person for you, then it is best to move on to someone else. Some individuals are designers by nature but there are others who just fill a seat. What you have to find is the individual with a special mix of creativity and business acumen. A designer has to be able to clearly articulate ideas and then execute them in a reasonable time frame and on budget. This is a rare combination of abilities in the artistic community.

What types of services do KENDALL & Co. provide?

First and foremost we are a creative firm. We help our clients distinguish between what is ordinary and what is spectacular. We welcome clients with all types of design needs who are impressed with both the breadth and depth of our services:

• Colour Consultation
• In-Home Design Consultation
• Space Planning
• CAD Drawings
• Custom Furniture & Upholstery
• Custom Window Treatments
• Custom Floor Coverings
• Wall Décor and Art Selection
• Lighting and LED Solutions
• Sourcing of Furnishings

From kid's room to boardrooms, we are well versed in the complex designs of kitchens, bathrooms to custom-built homes.

We offer a complimentary “meet and greet” at our design studio where we thoroughly explain our services and process to determine a package particular to your situation.

A retainer enables us to move forward with full concepts, detailed options, measurements, technical drawings, shopping list, trade quotes, budget and timeline for you.

We can supplement our Design Package with Project Management Services. That means we supervise the trades to carry through according to the approved design, budget and milestones. We also mitigate contingencies that may reveal themselves during construction. We coordinate the purchase and delivery of design products, available exclusively through our industry relationships. Above all, we communicate with you and ensure progress for you.

Who are your clients?

We work with a varied clientele all of whom share a desire for intelligent and cohesive design. We enjoy working with clients who live in Cabbagetown as the proximity and commonalities help with the flow of the project.

What are the advantages of your business over others?

KENDALL & Co. is a convenient "one-stop shop" with the resources and talent to comprehensively design your home to reflect your style and budget.

We are always open to the ideas and desires of our clients so the outcome is original and personal. But when clients give us the latitude to push the envelope and stay true to our professional vision, the results are phenomenal.

We advise our clients to be fully aware of the truths of renovations especially those involving older houses. I bring personal integrity and an extensive experience in design and construction to the proper stewardship of your home. Those who contract KENDALL & Co end up with an increased enjoyment and value of their property.
Cabbagetown Resident Designer, Kendall Williams
I am also a Cabbagetowner who invests time and money in the future of our community. My independent business sponsors the good work of various local nonprofits every year. Statistics show, on average, that such organizations receive 250% more support from small business owners than from larger businesses. Whenever possible we also buy local, such as Nettleship’s Paint and Home Hardware on Parliament St. I have my business lunches in the neighbourhood and it shows on my cherubic figure.

Next week, we will get to know Kevin Kung from Kendall & Co.
Stay tuned to find out how this dynamic duo has succeeded in transforming many spaces.

10th Annual Regent Park Film Festival

Tickets are $50 each and include:

  • Meet-and-greet with filmmakers
  • A 2012 Festival Program announcing this year’s line-up
  • Reception with refreshments
  • A charitable tax receipt for $40

The purpose of the Regent Park Film Festival is to be a vehicle for Regent Park and inner city communities around the world to express their viewpoint – to offer film as a means to be understood, to tell stories and share life. The Festival is unique in is that it charges no admission. This Fabulous Fundraising Screening , and your support, will help us a lot.

And WE ARE WISCONSIN is a brilliant documentary that follows the unfolding of public outcry against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s controversial budget-repair bill over 18 historic days in 2011. When I saw it at Hot Docs people were on their feet clapping and cheering – totally inspirational and very timely with what’s going on in the US presidential race.

You can go to regentparkfilmfestival.com to buy a ticket. If you can’t make it, you could purchase a ticket for a Regent Park youth to attend or you can simply make a donation.

Autumn Breeze

Hello Friends and Neighbours!

It was an amazing feeling seeing everyone come out for the Cabbagetown Festival of the Arts.

We dedicated serious time and effort to making this year one we'll remember for a very long time.
We hope you had an awesome time!
We've got next year's planning already on the mind.

One of our best sucessess' was the Kidz Korner at Gerrard and Parliament and that's only because of our great volunteers.

Next week I will be dedicating a Blog  post to our volunteers and the community groups that partnered with us to make 2012 the year that the Festival was "THAT GOOD!"
We're so proud of everyone's hard work and can only imagine how much better it can get.

The pictures are so great that we're making a slideshow. If you'd like to some videos and pictures that people have shared with us, add us as a friend on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/cabbagetown.bia

This week we prepare for the Thanksgiving long weekend and our new Blog. I'm super excited about all the great things we have coming up.

Today, we share Part I of a two-part spotlight on Kendall Williams from Kendall & Co.

You can add our good friends on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/KendallandCoDesignDecor for daily updates.

Kendall & Co.
Part I

 Cabbagetown's Resident Designer, Kendall Williams.
We asked Kendall a couple of questions about his shop and he replied with great enthuasiasm and grace :)

When did you start KENDALL & Co.?

I started KENDALL & Co. three years ago when I rebranded my design business to signal a new direction and a new location. It was the right time as we had outgrown our old office. Our new location at 227 Carlton St, in the commercial core of Cabbagetown brings a dynamic energy to the business. I also wanted to refocus on residential design as this type of project is personally more fulfilling than commercial projects or TV shows.

Why do you choose interior design as your profession?

I have never thought of any other career. Interior designing has been part of me from early on in my life. I can remember being able to draw and visualize my environment before I could write. Even today, a colour selector with colours that I have not used before still trigger something in my soul.

How do you approach interior design?

I see spaces intimately reflecting those who use them, work amongst them or live within them. There has to be a connection with the person, the company or the brand that goes beyond merely finished surfaces. Design can create a story by directing your movement, your senses and emotions.

Design is about communication and logic based on fundamentals. If you listen and have a genuine dialogue with the client, the design will happen organically. My experience, instincts and education are brought to these dialogues to ensure a balance of form and function.

Why do you live in Cabbagetown?

I feel fortunate to live in Cabbagetown. It is neighbourly, unpretentious and urban. The people who live and work here come from varied backgrounds. Local homeowners take great pride in the interior and exterior of their residences. The design services and the products of KENDALL & Co. can help them maintain their high standards. I choose to have my business here because I see positive growth in the neighbourhood. The redevelopment of Regent Park and Corktown will add a new vibrancy to our neighbourhood.

Why do you enjoy working at KENDALL & Co.?

When I first came to Toronto, after finishing my schooling in California, interior design was not a familiar concept as it is today. However, this young Cape Bretoner did not give up on his dream. In various jobs, working my way up, I honed my craft over 20 years. The result of this effort is KENDALL & Co. My creative team and I are excited about working with you in realizing your dreams.

Tune in next week to learn how Kendall & Co. can help you love you space.

We are presenting BLAIR'S RUN as our opener for this year's festivities.

Blair's Run is a community mini-marathon with participants running through Cabbagetown to raise funds for the Cabbagetown Youth Centre.

The Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC) was founded in 1972 as the Cabbagetown Boxing Club to provide at-risk youth with positive alternatives through sport and recreation, while encouraging ongoing education.
Over the past 39 years, the CYC has expanded to meet the growing needs of the community to provide a complete range of recreational, social and educational & skill development programs for ages ranging from newborns to seniors, while maintaining a specific focus on at-risk children and youth.CYC’s mandate is to provide barrier-free access to a full range of programs otherwise not available to some of the most marginalized and high-need children, youth and families through the support and creation of sustainable programming to respond to gaps in services and combat risk factors.

As a result, over the years the CYC has expanded from its original site at 2 Lancaster Avenue by establishing three satellite sites in the heart of St. James Town, one of North America’s most densely populated and underserviced communities. CYC also operates programs at Rose Avenue Public School and Winchester Public School.

The CYC is an amazing component within our neighbourhood and all the help they receive goes right back into the community.
