Youngo Verma: Cosmic Energy and Tantric Enlightenment

Youngo Verma
(b. 1938)
Youngo Verma is a painter and sculptor who trained and worked with the great Indian masters B.C. Sanyal and K.S. Kulkarni. In 1971, influenced by the Bauhaus school he moved to Germany to to study and work under Michael Croissant, where he further honed his skills in sculpture and bronze casting. During his 10 years in Germany, Youngo worked tirelessly sketching, painting and sculpting from live models. He held several solo shows, group exhibitions and commissioned works. In 1981, Youngo Verma moved to Toronto, Canada.
Youngo Verma’s murals and sculptures adorn public buildings across India, Nepal, Germany and Canada, such as a large relief disc for the Toronto School Board comprising busts of seven past Canadian presidents. His works are in public and private collections in Europe and North America, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. His artistic journey has taken him from Delhi to Frankfurt and eventually Toronto where he has lived for the last three decades.
Youngo’s drawings examine and explore Tantra and the complex phenomenon of cosmic energy. What is it and how can we tap into it? How are cosmic energy and individual creativity related? Will exposure to cosmic energy heighten one's consciousness and personal creativity? What insight can be gained from an artist’s interpretation of cosmological questions?
Drawing with the mind of a sculptor, his work hints at the spiritual discourse between the figure and the abstract, meditation and space. Viewing his drawings, an art critic found herself immersed in the world of neutrons and protons circling the nucleus of the atom, and remarked, ‘…the artist is trying to reach the smallest known reality of the world, the basis of matter, of forms and shapes and maybe of art.’ It is not an insignificant tribute to the genius of Youngo.
Youngo Verma uses lighter pointillism in the center of darker pencil work – this interplay is the magic of his artistry. He plays with our perception of forms – it is hypnotic and expressive – the work standing out distinctly for its chastity and austerity. He subconsciously succeeds in manipulating the medium to create an illusory, three-dimensional, almost palpable feel compelling the viewer to reach out and touch. These soothing Tantra-inspired simple graphite drawings evoke a sensitivity towards both the sculptural, outward form, and the inner essence of a thought process of movement and stillness. Taking off from his metal sculptures of his earlier period, his work leads us directly to the crucial issues arising from his affirmation of the transcendent imagination.
