Day 3 of Holiday Shopping Guide Journal

Hello Cabbagetown,

Yesterday way my 3rd adventure around town (Cabbagetown of course) where I explored our diverse array of shops, south of Carlton Street on Parliament. The greatest part about this? Not only do I get to share the amazing deals and items that each store has to offer, but I also get to share who is open and closed during this holiday season

I would encourage everyone to go out and explore the local shops like I have.

Until then, you can kick back and take a browse through the Cabbagetown BIA's latest blog posts.

Happy Holidays Everyone! I'll be back tomorrow with more news on Gerrard St. shops and Parliament St. (north of Carlton, on the east side).

Best Breakfast Place
432 Parliament St.

Best Breakfast Place is located just south of Carlton on Parliament, on the west side of the street. They are open on Christmas morning, where every year they welcome local seniors and members from our community who enjoy spending their holidays together.

If you are looking for a morning bite on Christmas, they're open from approximately 9:00am to 1:00pm. They're also opened for shortened hours on New Year's Eve.

They are open on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (9:00am to 7:00pm) and closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Good News: Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum finds a home

http://www.insidetoronto.com/news-story/4275699-cabbagetown-regent-park-community-museum-gets-a-home/

After years of setting up shop in a variety of different locations, the Cabbagetown/Regent Park Community Museum (CRPCM) is a step closer to having a building of its own to call home.
“This gives us a lot more room for our exhibits,” said Carol Moore-Ede, the main driving force behind getting the museum up and running nearly a decade ago. “We’ll have room for storage, a resource centre, research facilities and of course an exhibit space.”
The museum has secured a site in a row of heritage buildings on the northwest corner of Gerrard and Parliament streets, near where the third phase of the Regent Park revitalization is underway.
The idea for a museum to look at the history of the Cabbagetown and Regent Park communities came about in 2004 and the museum itself was incorporated as a not-for-profit in 2008.
The CRPCM was set up to showcase the long history and multicultural nature of the venerable area, from its early days as some of Toronto’s oldest communities through Regent Park’s rise as a major social housing experiment right to today. It features photos, artifacts and oral histories from residents.
The new announcement finally gives the local organization its own space.
Though the deal to secure the property for the museum’s use went through last week, the museum will not be able to move into the space for a while. The site features a row of residences dating back to 1879 that were subsequently turned into businesses, including a pharmacy and a Mr. Sub.
The venerable buildings will make a fitting home for the museum.
“It’s going to take at least a year for us to raise the money to start the restoration,” Moore-Ede said. “We want to restore the building back to the way it was and show its historical significance.”
The interior of the building will also need work to ensure it has the proper lighting for a museum setting and heat and moisture controls that will help preserve the artifacts it holds.
“Right now, we’re supported by donations, foundations and some government programs that are related to schools and students, but we’ll be starting up a proper capital campaign to help cover the costs,” Moore-Ede said.
In the meantime, it will be business as usual for the CRPCM, with its usual exhibition space still open at Riverdale Farm and a satellite location in the lobby of the Toronto Police 51 Division headquarters. The museum has also exhibited in Mackenzie House and has made use of space in Daniels Spectrum.
Moore-Ede said the museum is not planning on withdrawing from those locations provided the opportunity to continue on in those sites remains.
“We’re hoping to keep our satellite spaces open and continue to have exhibits there,” Moore-Ede said.
