February: Cabbage Month

Hello Cabbagetowners!
Welcome to a new edition of Cabbagetown News.

To start, I'd like to share an interesting little fact about February:
Originally, in Old English, February was "Kale-monath".
"Kale" is a kind of cabbage, which started appearing at this time of the year.

I'm sure many of our beautiful Victorian house have seen their share of cabbages through the years and although February is the shortest month of the year, there is no shortage of events and celebrations to attend in and around Cabbagetown.

This week sees the start of Lunar New Year, continuation of Black History Month, and of course, Valentine's Day.

For thousands of years, people have celebrated the arrival of the Lunar New Year; the celebrations become part of the ritual and the traditions become part of their lives. While many traditions are being challenged in today’s social context, one needs to find deeper strength to rationalize those celebrations. What are we celebrating? Is it awakening of our own existence? Is it rediscovery of our past? Or is it the new chapter of this ancient celebration? What does Lunar New Year mean to you?

Chai Found Music Workshop's latest choreographed performance fuses traditional Chinese music and instruments with popular music of today.

This weekend enjoy LunarFest for FREE at the Harbourfront Centre.

CIBC LunarFest is Canada’s premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture. It endeavors to share in the diversity of our country with Canadians both new and old. It also encourages and fosters the collaboration of Canadian and international cultural presenters to create new forms of artistic expressions. CIBC LunarFest is a festival that brings together soul, art and life on one stage.

Harbourfront also has DJ Skate Nights on Saturdays from 8 - 11pm on the Natrel Skating Rink.
This week DJ Serious joins them to Welcome the Year of the Snake at the LunarSkate party complete with lanterns, skating activities and more!

Next Valentine's Day long weekend, enjoy the sounds of DJ Lissa Monet on the ice after enjoying a day full of pampering in Cabbagetown.

Now to share some GREAT NEWS from around Cabbagetown...
Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs Newsletter
On January 26th, 2012 the Club re-opened the doors to it's brand new facility at 101 Spruce Street. We noticed some striking similarities between our Grand Re-Opening last year and the 1988 refurbishment project. You might not be able to tell, but in the photo on the left is a picture of Toronto`s former Mayor and our former Club-kid, Senator Art Eggleton, who was made an official Patron of the Club in 1988.

The Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs has been a great friend to us at the BIA and they continue to do amazing work in the community.

Read their Newsletter for Upcoming Events, Volunteer Positions and general info.

A HUGE Congratulations is due for Captain Ron Farr from the Salvation Army's Warehouse Mission.
Last month he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his amazing work in the community.

His wife, Cpt. Linda Farr, reflects on the occasion and shares a video of the ceremony with us. Click the link for more information: http://www.thewarehousemission.com/captain-rons-blog.html
