Lots to see & Do

Hello Friends of Cabbagetown and welcome to another week of fun. Although this was a short work week, this is no shortage of things to do in Cabbagetown this weekend and coming up...

The Cabbagetown Preservation Association Garden Tour - "Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces" - takes place on Sunday, June 2 from 10:00am - 3:00pm when ten private gardens will be on view.

This self-guided tour, using the map on the ticket, brings visitors along the streets of the Cabbagetown Heritage Conservation District of downtown Toronto and through quiet back lanes or tree-lined streets to hidden alcoves of greenery.
This year, you can get some really good promotions from our local businesses on the day of the tour - just show your ticket and get fabulous discounts!
For more info and pictures click here.

The Riverdale Farm Farmer's Market starts on Tuesday, May 28th from 3 - 7pm.

Check out our previous blog post that gives you all the updates happening at the farm by clicking here.

And last but not least, a very important message from the Cabbagetown BIA:

The Cabbagetown BIA is preparing to undertake several neighbourhood beautification initiatives and seeks the input of community members from Cabbagetown, Regent Park and St Jamestown. Please take 5 to 7 minutes to complete this survey which will help us better understand how you feel about your neighbourhood’s main thoroughfare, Parliament Street, and its adjacent public spaces.

Cabbagetown’s most prominent mural stands at the corner of Carlton and Parliament Streets and since 1996, has been a fixture of our community. You may like the concept and the design or perhaps you would have chosen different imagery. We are planning to complete two new murals in our neighbourhood this year and need your ideas.

Your opinion is highly valued and we invite you to complete this survey, to participate in the beautification of Cabbagetown.Click the link to participate in our very important survey: Mural Survey

Sincere thanks for your time.

The Relationship Show "It takes two, to buy art..."
MJG Gallery is participating in the The Relationship Show at The International Centre in Mississauga this coming weekend, May 24-26th. This is the inaugural show and certainly a curious venue to offer original art.
I've always believed in a household with two spouses or partners, buying art should be treated as a joint venture. So with that in mind, I think doing this kind of show should actually work as well as introducing the West End to MJG.
Bev Jenkins original art
Come enjoy mixed gallery-offerings along with work by artist-owner Mark Gleberzon while Bev Jenkins' "sculpted oils" will also be featured including some new work.
IF you do visit the show and buy a painting during your visit, I will deduct the show fee from your receipt - just let me know to deduct the fee upon your purchase.

You're all Invited!

Urban Roots Youth
Leslie Topness, Program Co-ordinator: "We are so lucky to work with a lovely crew of youth this year. Mostly high schoolers, these guys have impressed us with their commitment. They have been so helpful prepping beds at our elementary school gardens, shoveling and turning compost, and even double digging new beds. Plus planting lots of seeds that are filling the greenhouse with tender young plants. These youngsters don't just want to grow food, they also want to understand our mixed up (unhealthy and unjust) food system, and figure out what we are going to do about it. Phenomenal. We are gearing up for a video project in the garden in partnership with Regent Park Focus: the topic--food stories: growing up. Stay tuned to see the final project late this summer.
For those of you who don't know the program: Urban Roots Youth is a garden and food justice program for youth aged 15-29, from Regent Park, Cabbagetown, and St. Jamestown neighbourhoods. The youth begin with caring for seedlings and designing their own garden plots in Allan Gardens Children's Greenhouse, then move out to the garden to plant, grow and learn about different issues related to food justice. Many of the youth will continue to volunteer, helping us maintain gardens throughout the summer when schools are out, help run our booth at the new Regent Park Farmer's Market and help us keep the gardens thriving."
Keep up with this crew at https://www.facebook.com/UrbanRootsYouth.
Thanks in large part to Telus Community Funding and the City of Toronto for supporting this program.

Community Updates

A few updates from Riverdale Farm
A Message from the Cabbagetown South Residents Association
Dear friends and neighbours,

Spring is finally here and it is time to get outside and enjoy walking Cabbagetown streets!  Unfortunately, spring and summer brings an increase in foot traffic and some unsavory activity to lane ways and (not so) hidden spaces.

The CRA is collaborating with 51 Division Police Services to schedule safety walks through problematic areas of our neighbourhood. These safety walks can be done during the day or at night - the purpose is to directly view areas of concern and highlight ways to increase safety and security and reduce the occurrence of unwelcome activity through environmental changes and design.
The CRA is asking its members and residents of Cabbagetown to identify 'hotspots' of unwanted activity for which a safety walk may be beneficial by emailing the following details toinfo@cabbagetowner.com:

·        street/ lane way name, OR address/description of the area of concern
·        2 - 3 sentences about your observations and concerns.
·        whether day or night safety walk is preferred (determined by problems identified)
·        other relevant information

Once received, we will work with 51 Division Police Services to schedule safety walks in priority areas. We plan to begin safety walks in the month of June 2013.

Thank you,
CRA Board

You know you won't want to miss the opportunity to travel into a world of "Fantasies and Other Poisons" with Fickle Things. These lovely ladies were enthusiastic as they helped us scrub and clean the Cabbagetown BIA Community Board on the corner of Parliament and Carlton St.
They're great :)
We'll be front row this upcoming July 26th for their show.

FANTASIES AND OTHER POISONS
July 26-28, 2012 | 8PM
Winchester Street Theatre

Fickle Things - Emma Kerson, Jane Alison McKinney, Jillian Peever, and Freya Sargent present a new work originally choreographed by
Sharon B. Moore
Produced with the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.

"FANTASIES AND OTHER POISONS" flows like a moving portraiture: Five faces of desperation held together by the fantasy and illusion of those... less fortunate.

Bold and exciting, the work pairs theatricality with magnetic physicality in an intimate, quirky, and desperate world.

Mr. Leftovers: a man whose whole existence revolves around leftover thoughts, both his own and others.

Almost Queen: the inner dialogue of a handmaid concentrating thoroughly on her imaginings of becoming Queen.

Olga: a woman who fights to stay atop the Russian superstar elite.

Sylphia: a young sylph obsessed with fables.

Oracle: a has-been mystic who explores the pleasures and pitfalls of her decadent side.

Thursday, July 26 - opening night reception
Friday, July 27 - Q&A with the dancers

Toronto Dance Theatre (TDT) and The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (the School) are proud to announce that major capital improvements are underway to their long-time home at 80 Winchester Street in the heart of Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood, thanks to the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the City of Toronto’s Heritage Grant Program.

FEEDING OUR FUTURE BBQ AT LORD DUFFERIN PUBLIC SCHOOL
July 18, 2012 (12:00 - 1:00 pm)

To highlight the Feeding Our Future program, all summer long the Sodexo Foundation will be hosting BBQs for at-risk children from local camps.

Next Wednesday, July 18, 250 kids from camps - many subsidized - will have a blast celebrating Feeding Our Future at Lord Dufferin Public School in Toronto (350 Parliament St, M5A 2Z7).

The kids will have a fantastic BBQ lunch, receive a basketball clinic from the Raptors Mobile Fan Zone and compete in the fine art of cupcake decorating.

Even the mascots will be there! Mascots Carlton the Bear and Raptor will be at the BBQ from 11:30-noon.

Let the Hunger Games begin! The only problem is, for one million Canadian children, summer ain't no hunger game.  As soon as school ended a couple weeks back, an already dire situation got much worse. Children, who are over-represented among food bank recipients in Canada (more than one-third of all food bank recipients are children) became more vulnerable on that warm day at the end of June when their school closed. Across Canada, one million children who depend on school lunch programs for basic nutrition simply go without once their schools close down for the summer.

However, this problem is starting to change. The Sodexo Foundation started a program called Feeding Our Future in 2000. The summer lunch program partners with community hunger relief organizations like Second Harvest to provide free summer lunches to children in need. Sodexo and Second Harvest provide the equipment, food and employee manpower necessary to feed children who would otherwise go hungry.

The simple, but vastly effective program was launched in Toronto with support from a client kitchen and Second Harvest and has since grown coast-to-coast to a total of nine cities (including Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Regina, Oakville, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax).

To date, the Feeding Our Future program has provided over 750,000 free meals to at risk children in Canada.

The program is one of Sodexo's several Stop Hunger Initiatives that get at the root causes of hunger in Canada as part of the company's commitment to the communities where it does business.

See below for contact information, if you would like to come see this program in action. Xposure PR can arrange interviews with camp children and volunteers from the Sodexo Foundation and its partner, Second Harvest.

ART CITY MURAL PROJECT
In June, Art City wrapped up a 240ft mural project now located at Queen and Woodbine. The mural took two months to complete with the help of the children who attend the program. The theme of the mural is the environment, aquatic wildlife and plant life in the beaches community.

Art City is for children ages 6-13 in the St. James Town and Toronto area. Art City promotes the development of creative thinking, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, instilling confidence and teaching respect and tolerance of others through art. Arty City runs an after school program and are currently in their second week of summer programming.

If you drive by Sherbourne and Wellesley you will notice the mural that Art City created last summer. Art City works with many community arts organizations and is starting to host elementary school field trips.

Great things are to come!

RIVERDALE FARM STAYS OPEN AFTER LARGE PUBLIC SHOW OF SUPPORT!

The Mayor's executive committee voted unanimously this past Tuesday to fund the Riverdale Farm with the money it needs to continue operations.

Prior to the vote, a local group called the The Riverdale Farm Coalition stepped forward to raise the $500,000 needed each year. So far, the Coalition has raised $17,000 since June and aims to raise $100,000 this year.

Previously, sponsorship money needed to first cover operating expenses. Now, ordinary fundraising will go to offset operating costs, while sponsorships can go towards property enhancements.

Support the efforts by joining in the fundraising activities, and by dropping off your donation in one of the donation boxes now placed on the farm grounds.  All donations will be collected by the Toronto Parks & Trees Foundation.

In 1978, the Riverdale Farm opened on the old Riverdale zoo site, and is an example of an Ontario farm between 1880 and 1920. It's the perfect spot to escape the city while being in the city!
