Happy Canada Day from Cabbagetown BIA

Cabbagetown wishes all a Happy Canada Day Eh!
For a neighbourhood that so strongly identifies with itself and even has its own flag you would think that we were planning to separate. But the opposite is true as Cabbagetown is a microcosm of what being a Canadian is all about. We are diverse accepting and manage to get along and make everything work.
The BIA continues to make improvements to the local infrastructure to ensure safety, restore beauty and provide a vision for one of Canada’s oldest main streets and shopping districts.
If you were to visit all 200 or so of our businesses you would find in every shop warm and friendly owners, and staff representaive of all the diversity that is Canada, no wonder we are the envy of the world for peace, tolerance, acceptance and a beacon to the world as the place to be.
So from all of us at the Cabbagetown BIA, Happy Canada Day.

Anniversary Park Pilot Project

BIA Executive Director, David Blackmore, VP Daniels Corp, Remo Agostini and BIA Chair Frank Bernardo recently met to discuss redevelopment plans for Anniversary Park at the corner of Parliament and Gerrard at the suggestion of Councillor Pam McConnell.

Phase 3 of Regent Park will be complete in the next 2 to 4 years and the park could play a major role in establishing a natural corridor to the Cabbagetown BIA main street and compliment the new development on the South east side.

A pilot project which would temporarily cordon traffic and animate the park would help determine the feasibility of developing the park. This is an idea we are exploring.

The BIA is in discussions with City Economic Development and would like to hear from community groups as to how best use the park during the pilot.

The BIA will be updating it's preliminary streetscape design from 2009.

For more information contact David at the BIA

Lido Lands Global TV as Festival Media Sponsor

Low flying beavers, pillow fights in Kendall’s window (oh behave), partridges at the Pear Tree, a society for osteopathic wellness demo on a skeleton or a vacation for your hair at the Hair Spa are some of the zany ideas for this year’s festival as business owners get in on the advanced publicity. There was even talk of cutting the cheese instead of the sacred cabbage but the committee decided the idea stunk.

Festival coordinator Lido Chilelli having just announced that Global TV would be our official media sponsor, this presents visual opportunities in the lead up to promote this year’s festival and our members are encouraged to participate in the fun. Patio extensions for all restaurants have been approved and Lido will deliver a no-brainer kit for restaurants to fill out and return to the BIA.

Publicist Joanne Smale will be running an extensive PR campaign to tell the stories of our member businesses and will publicize it through a broad range of media outlets. The BIA office will be transformed into Media Central during the festival. Video clips, stories and photos will also be posted daily on our social media campaign with the Social Cabbage.

Social Media Coordinator Geoffrey Chen is available to video and photograph your project and our team will help if you need help with your ideas.

Members can join in the fun by contacting the BIA office today.

Riverdale Farm Aid - June 19th

Quick update about music and auction items. $10 admission for these musical acts ... seriously?

Our musical acts are confirmed:

* The Brendan Canning Band *
Even with Broken Social Scene on indefinite hiatus, it’s been an especially busy year for Brendan Canning: he recently revived his long-dormant, pre-BSS indie-pop project Cookie Duster; he composed the soundtrack to Paul Schrader’s upcoming Lindsay Lohan spectacle, The Canyons (written by Bret Easton Ellis); and he’s currently working on an ambitious interactive video-game/film project based on a premise that involves director David Cronenberg selling his intellectual property to a biotech lab. Amidst all this, he found time to write and record You Gots 2 Chill, providing the clearest, most personal portrait to date of an artist who’s spent much of his two- decade career making other people sound better. Back in the ’60s, some acoustic- guitar slinging boho from Minnesota extolled the virtues of bringing it all back home— with You Gots 2 Chill, Brendan Canning updates that maxim to 21st-century standards

* Lemon Bucket Orkestra *
A Canadian self-described 'Balkan-Klezmer-Gypsy-Party-Punk-Super-Band'. From Toronto to New York, Budapest to Berlin, audiences around the world are hailing LBO as folk music revolutionaries. Since their birth four years ago, the band has grown from its initial quartet of buskers to a fifteen-piece guerilla folk force with an army of grass roots followers and mainstream fans at home and abroad. Their wild, joyful experiences are rarely contained by four walls. Their celebrations of tradition and culture are expressed with an explosive punk spirit. Their ecstatic street parades erupt from the collision of nostalgia and imagination. Wall Street Journal says, "Adventurously multicultural ... amazing" and Moses Znaimer says, "One of a kind sound ... the best party band ever"

Our AUCTION items are rolling in ... here are three one-of-a-kind opportunities you could bid on:

Lunch with Steve Paikin
Steve Paikin OC OOnt is a Canadian journalist, author, and documentary producer at TVO, Ontario's public broadcaster. He is currently anchor of TVO's flagship current affairs program The Agenda with Steve Paikin

Lunch with Christie Blatchford Born in Quebec and studied journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto. She has written for all four Toronto-based newspapers. She has won a National Newspaper Award for column writing and in 2008 won the Governor-General’s Literary Award in non-fiction for her book Fifteen Days: Stories of Bravery, Friendship, Life and Death from Inside the New Canadian Army.

Lunch with Terry Fallis
Author of 4 national bestsellers. His debut novel, The Best Laid plans, won the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and was crowned the 2011 winner of CBC Canada Read as the 'essential Canadian novel of the decade'. In January 2014 CBC aired a 6-part television miniseries based on the book and it is also in development as a stage musical by Touchstone Theatre in Vancouver.
